If you wish to remain fully in the dark about the future of the show and its characters, do look away. Otherwise, carry on.

In regards to the Teddy/Owen/Cristina (Bermuda) Triangle, she says that new doc Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) will mess with Cristina and Owen’s relationship “but not how you’d expect.” Rhimes continued, “I think everyone assumes it’s going to go one way. It’s a very different story than we’ve ever told before.”

In related news, Kevin McKidd told TV Guide, “Something happens between the three of them that’s pretty explosive. Up until now you’ve not really seen anyone draw any lines in the sand, but you start to see that this week.”

What does it all mean? Besides the obvious: Cristina does not like Teddy. So much for loving her present.

Moving on to Meredith and Derek:

Well, we know they’re not breaking up. And that they’re going to have “work-related challenges.” Aside from that, we don’t really know much more. Rhimes said, “I think a lot of what’s going on with them is watching them come into their own as doctors [and] watching what goes on between them in the hospital situation.” So, work-related challenges. Emotional highs and lows. The usual.

If you’re concerned for the Chief after the end of last week’s episode: You should be. According to Shonda Rhimes, that whole mess is going to “get a little complicated. That’s going to get more complicated than I think anybody expects.” Can we say uh-oh? Doesn’t look like it will get complicated in the surgery department though. “I really want to protray the real story and what happens when a doctor goes off the wagon and how they deal with that.”

On the plus side, if you love Loretta Divine (Mrs. Chief) good news: She’ll be back often. Hooray!

Regarding Katherine Heigl’s return and then confirmed re-departure, Shonda Rhimes says that they’ll adapt to the change and that they have no idea how long her “maternity” will last for.

Speaking of parents, Mark Sloan will be dealing with that particular storyline soon enough as his grown-up child makes an appearance. Of this particular story, Rhimes said, “That’s going to be fairly interesting. We’re going to dive very far into Mark Sloan and discover a bunch of stuff.”

So it’s a fair and resonable request – and one that I see very often – to want Burke to return to Seattle Grace. The topic keeps coming back over and over again, and I see it in the comments over and over again, so I wanted to reiterate that while I still maintain a “never say never” philosophy, the current state of things is that Burke is never coming back.

It has even been suggested to Shonda Rhimes that she recast Burke with a different actor if the issue is with Isaiah Washington. But – and I’m relieved to hear this – she feels that none of the characters on the show are re-castable. I think there’s a lot of viewers that don’t mind it when a different actor comes in for a character, but I seriously loathe it when that happens.

Unfortunately, with regards to Burke, it means that it’s very, very unlikely that he’ll ever return to Grey’s Anatomy.

The most recent quote by Shonda Rhimes on the topic of whether she feels that the Burke storyline was left lingering is, “I feel like we really played that storyline out in the way we meant to play it out – and I think it worked.”

But for the sake of conversation, if left up to you, would you bring Burke back? And would you be okay with it being a different actor that plays him?

Heigl’s unexpected (or perhaps expected) break from Grey’s potentially overlaps with Ellen Pompeo’s upcoming maternity leave. Which means that for a big chunk of the first half of season 6 we’ll likely be missing both Izzie and Meredith. Expect to see the other doctors at Seattle Grace picking up a lot of extra screen time.

Then again, maybe not, seeing that the ever-revolving door of our favorite hospital has been spinning inward lately. New cast members have been added to the roster, such as Jesse Williams, who Ausiello confirmed will indeed have a recurring role in the series. Others like Nora Zehetner and Robert Baker have also been cofirmed.

As Shonda Rhimes somewhat cryptically pointed out during an interview earlier this summer, “Eventually, everybody is going to leave the show.” And she went on to state that season 6 would be about exploring the potential immortality of life beyond MerDer and the rest of the core cast.

So expect things this season to feel a bit experimental. Not too experimental, we hope. But yes.

Now the L.A. Times tells us that Alexie Gilmore (World’s Greatest Dad) is shooting an episode of Private Practice that will eventually send her over to Grey’s Anatomy. Details as to what will be involved in the Grey’s side of things remains hidden in the dark abyss wherein Shonda keeps all the stuff she doesn’t yet want us to know.

But, we do know the following regarding her storyline for Private Practice:

Gilmore will be playing a dying woman in need of a kidney transplant. Her sister is the only one that can give her this kidney. After this, her character will head on over to Grey’s to … well, to something.

More details on this when they rain down on us. In the meantime, what do you think of all of these crossovers? Do you think ABC has the right idea? Do you watch Private Practice anyway?

What we do know, is that she remains both pregnant and beautiful, and seems to really enjoy strolling through Los Angeles with a cell phone and some coffee. It remains to be seen how Shonda Rhimes will hide the pregnancy during the first episodes of Grey’s Anatomy’s season 6. While some viewers were hoping that the pregnancy would make it onto the storyline, it’s not quite happening. Admittedly, the timing is sort of off. But we can still hope for a McBaby at some point in the future.

During the 2009 Summer Press Tour, ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson spoke briefly about Grey’s Anatomy, stating that the show is “evolving” and that Shonda Rhimes “hit her stride” at the end of season five. So far, McPherson and the rest of the ABC suits seem to be “happy” with what they’ve seen of season six, which for us can mean just about anything. But hopefully good things!

In terms of what’s to come next season (avert your eyes if you don’t want to know anything!) he stated that the show would be seeing a few additions to the cast (interns maybe?) to fill the void left by Ellen Pompeo’s maternity leave. While there’s no confirmation yet how long her absense might be, McPherson said it might take the actress out for “a couple of episodes.” I wouldn’t necessarily count on the two episode estimate though, as it’s really hard to say how long it might take.

In a statement regarding Katherine Heigl’s commentary on her cruel and mean return to Grey’s, McPherson said that the whole thing was “unfortunate” and made the good point that, “There are so many people who work unbelievably hard on Grey’s… so I think it’s really hard for them to hear [her complain about working a 17-hour day].” No doubt!

Aside from the usual dose of Heigl-drama, it looks like season six is going to be an interesting challenge for the writers, particularly with Ellen Pompeo’s temporary absence and T.R. Knight’s more permanent one. I’m interested to see what they mean by “evolving.”

Shonda Rhimes

The crossover will occur during the third episode of Private Practice so be sure to tune in. It’s been revealed that per her nature Baily will “not be shy about sharing her opinions about the goings-on at Oceanside.” So we can probably guess that it’s going to be a pretty humorous episode, or at least have a lot of funny moments in it.

Bailey in Oceanside, can’t wait! Hopefully, this means we’ll see the likes of Addison also returning to Seattle Grace at some point, although there’s no indication that this will happen any time soon. All the same, crossovers are usually pretty fun, so I’m looking forward to this one.

We knew, too, that Shonda Rhimes stated around the time of the announcement that she really wanted T.R. Knight to come back to film an episode of season six, but that Knight declined the offer. This left us wondering what exactly Rhimes might’ve wanted to film and whether it meant that George had a chance of survival, or not.

Well we now know for certain exactly why Shonda Rhimes wanted T.R. Knight back and what we won’t get to see.

I’m going to put the next part after the cut, and also warn anyone seeing this page directly that there are spoilers and would-be spoilers ahead so please stop reading if you don’t want to know anything for certain regarding George.

By now it’s probably no secret to most of us that George is dead. But for those holding out hope, there’s now confirmation that he does indeed die and does not instead survive and get tranferred to another hospital indefinitely, or get taken over by a different actor altogether, or anything of the sort.

The reason why Shonda Rhimes wanted T.R. Knight back is because she wanted to shoot an episode that took us back to the last day of George’s life, so we could see what happened in his day, so we could watch his decision to save the girl’s life at the risk of his own, all the while knowing exactly what would happen. “I wanted to see his last day [alive] really badly,” [Shonda Rhimes] says. “What I thought was interesting was the idea of, we now know it’s the last day of someone’s life, [so we’re] looking at it differently than [we] would any other time.”

She says that she “kind of” gets why T.R. Knight decided not to return to the show, but she’s disappointed that she won’t get to show this episode and feels the fans would’ve really appreciated the closure.

I admit I’m disappointed as well, as I think that the episode sounds like it would’ve been a beautiful tribute to the character.

Here’s the full quote from Shonda Rhimes about Ellen’s maternity leave and the future of Grey’s:

“Ellen is incredibly optimistic and somehow thinks she’ll be back and ready to rock ‘n’ roll. [But] I have a child, so I know that that’s not true. [So] we have a lovely story [on deck] that will take us into her maternity leave. And we have plans for some really interesting stand-alone episodes for [while she's gone]. But we’re heading towards the future of the show and eventually, unless we’re really lucky, everybody’s going to go. That’s what the end of season 5 taught me. So we’re looking at, How do we mess with that structure now while we have everybody and figure out ways in which, ‘What would we do without Ellen? What would we do if we had an episode without Patrick Dempsey?’ So season 6 is important. A lot of shows don’t make it through season 6 because they don’t know how to transition.”

A show without MerDer? Would you watch it??

Shonda Rhimes isn’t entirely certain that you’d watch it either, but she seems ready to try to make it work, should the day ever come when a MerDer-less series is what she’s left with. As she points out, “But [at least] we have Lexie Grey.”

Okay, I admit I really love Lexie, but I know a lot of you can’t stand her. Would you watch a Grey’s Anatomy in which there was no Meredith, no Derek and in their place there was Lexie? Let me know in the comments.

But let’s move on from these depressing thoughts because Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey and the rest of the cast seem to be staying put for now.

So what else is headed our way in season 6? Well, there’s no pregnant Meredith, that’s for sure. So if you were still hoping for that, let it go. Meredith might get pregnant sometime down the road, but not now.

Ausiello also mentions that it’s possible that Owen’s PTSD might “flare up” in the season premiere, since Amy Madigan – Seattles Grace’s number one shrink – will be guest-starring in the second hour.

And that’s about it for now!

Michael Ausiello posted a few sneak peeks of the article in question. This past season – season 5 – George’s screen time in the first nine episodes was atrocious. His total screen time for those nine episodes totaled 48 minutes, which is pretty sad compared to Sandra Oh’s 114. T.R. Knight reveals that he didn’t go to Rhimes to ask what was going on, and instead decided simply to move on from the show. “My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given [about George],” he explains. “And with respect, I’m going to leave it at that.”

Reading between the lines, we can see that there must’ve been a lot of friction between T.R. Knight and Shonda Rhimes and perhaps others. It’s unclear whether this friction was there from the beginning or if it came as a result of the whole Isaiah Washington mess. Though Shonda Rhimes denies it – insisting she was supportive of T.R. Knight’s decision to come out – T.R. states that Rhimes was among the people telling him not to come out. “I think she was concerned about having my statement come out so close to the [initial] event.”

He admits that he was not a fan of the storyline in which George cheats on Callie with Izzie, and that what came next for his character after that was a lot of nothingness (season 5). “There just comes a time when it’s so clear that moving on is the best decision,” he says.

Katherine Heigl tried to talk him out of it, insisting that she didn’t think it was the right decision and that whatever problems existed could be ironed out. But in the end she says that she’s happy for him because T.R. seemed ready to move on.

In terms of how he feels about leaving, T.R. Knight acknowledges that many people think that his leaving is seen as him being a spoiled actor, but he maintains that “in the end, I need to be fulfilled in my work.”
