Katherine Heigl Refuses Emmy Nomination

by Ingrid Diaz on June 12th, 2008

Katherine_heigle_05_ncIn a move that will likely see the actress on the front of Entertainment headlines, Katherine Heigl has stated that she will not be seeking an Emmy nomination this year. The reason? She felt her material this season wasn’t worthy of a nomination and she didn’t want to take the spot from someone else.

It’s an odd news story, first because it doesn’t happen very often that an actor says no to an Emmy nomination, and second because she’s in a way dissing the Grey’s Anatomy writers. I wonder how they feel about being told their material wasn’t good enough?

How do you feel about this? Do you think it’s a selfless gesture on Heigl’s part or a veiled attempt to demand better material in seasons to come?

I think it’s a tricky one. Either way, if Chandra Wilson and/or Sandra Oh are nominated this year it might give them a better shot at the prize.

I believe Katherine Heigl is getting a big head. I agree she is a decent actress and she has made funny movies but I believe her shining moment is about to end. She is still a young actress that should not diss the show that brought her out in the spotlight. I believe Katherine needs to watch her step because she is walking a fine line. Too many people will get a short time on the top and before they know it the rug is slip right out from under them. Katherine doesn’t need to cut too many ties.

@Pam I don’t think her character’s journey this season is as good as that of Dr. Bailey or Christina. Maybe she does want to step aside so that others can have a chance. Buzz created around an actress throughout the year gives her name recognition when it comes to award season.

I applaud Kathryn for what she’s done. To me it shows humility.

Moreover, it shouldn’t be taken as a slam against the writers. I have to imagine it’s hard to develop story arcs for an ensemble cast like we have on Grey’s. If Kathryn feels that someone else should get the nomination, then so be it.

Izzie’s storyline this season was not that spectacular, I think that her character did not have good writing. But other characters did. I think she is smart about it, does anyone really want to win something they think they didn’t earn?

katherine heigl become the single-most annoying person on grey’s anatomy. if she doesn’t like the material, tell the producers, don’t take that public. Although, she is going to look like a jack-ass. If she wants off the show, let her go. She’s selfish.

I agree that her performance and her material were not as good as previous seasons. Didn’t she play a HUGE part in getting Isaiah Washington out of the picture? Could be the writer’s and Shonda were not very happy about that and have done something about it??

I agree with Dan and I have to say that I respect her decision very much. She had her “shining” moment on the show was last season. She played a bigger part last season and this year, it was time for the other characters. I think it was very humble for her to step back and let Chandra and Sandra have the opportunity. I do not think she is trying to say anything negative about the writers, she is doing the right thing under the circumstances.

While I agree that Katherine’s part this season was not as big and maybe that she didn’t shine like in previous seasons, I do not agree with her calling out the material given to her - especially post strike. The writers had very little time and very few episodes to finish what they had planned. If an amazing Izzie storyline was not the most important storyline, then maybe it had to be pushed back or something. She can’t expect to have an Emmy worthy arc every season anyways - it is an ensemble cast, for crying out loud! I do respect her decision but do not think she handled things correctly…

@Angi I’m still having trouble seeing how you’re inferring that she was upset about her storyline. I believe she’s being very gracious and is not wanting to draw as much attention to herself for the Emmy awards.

She’s been in the public eye with her movies over the past year, and she doesn’t feel that her performance in Grey’s this season warrants a nomination, compared to that of others in the cast.

Dan - I see where you are coming from, but my interpretation came from the quote from her that said “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination…”
She seems to be referring to the storylines she was given by the writers, not her performance of it. As I said, I agree with her that she doesn’t deserve an emmy this year, but I think she should have just left it at her performance and not even brought up the material she was given, as this can look like an attack on the writers - even if this wasn’t her intent.

I believe Katherine wants out of her contract so is dissing the writers as to let her go. She might consider that Grey’s gave her a chance. She better hold on to it. Dhe may be sorry if she burns any bridges. Not everyone can have good stortlines and this wasn’t her year, especially with the short year. This was Meridith and Dereks year for a conclusion and the writers did it well. Also Bailey and Alex. Good job to all the writers. I loved the season finale.

It’s only a matter of time for Heigl, I think. there are some thing an actress just should not do, and dissing the writers one of them. It’s kind of whiny to gripe about not getting top billing on a show. My respect for Heigl is quickly dissipating.

I believe that KH has become a better actress, but I still feel Wilson and Oh are better. Up against those two, she shouldn’t get nominated. If she chooses not to be nominated because she feels that their acting was better, also Sara Ramirez was great too, then I understand, but if she is saying something against the writing then there is a problem. She does have a big head and it is ok when you can back it up. She has done some funny movies, bu I don’t think Julia Roberts or Renee or Nicole Kidman are worried about her taking their roles. I think that KH speaks a lot before she thinks. She is very vocal about many matters and sometimes you need to know when to be quiet. I remember her speaking out about Isaiah Washington (IW). She had more to say than Knight. She had a lot to say about how she felt in Knocked Up; she said something about how she didn’t like how her character was shown. She couldn’t just be happy with her success; she always has something negative to say. Event though she was more liked than IW, I feel that she is the one now bringing down the set. She just needs to sit back and enjoy her success and stop seeming like a kid who didn’t get everything they wanted for Christmas. I think she feels now that she is the star of the show and it isn’t so. I still feel every woman on the show has upstaged her in more than one scene. She needs to calm down and just act.

And as for her character not getting good lines, it is an ENSEBLE CAST! Everyone can’t always get the best story lines. Who made her think that she was supposed to outshine everyone else? Yes, it is honorable to sit back and say I don’t think I deserve it, but it is how you say it. She could have said that other actresses on my show deserved it more, but that isn’t what she said. She came off rude to her writing team, even if she didn’t mean it. I would love to hear more thoughts.

Once again KH mouth arrives before she does. I personally think she is a little upset that she is not the darling of the show and also they are not letting her out of her contract. I wish they would though because I am so sick of her mouth! She made a few movies and she was okay, not great! How many producers, writers, directors and other actors are going to want to work with her if they cannot trust her to behave herself and not run to the press everytime she is upset about something. The girl needs to grow up.

What did she say about Isaiah Washington, something about not talking in public. Maybe she should take some of her own advice. I agree with Debbie, if she doesn’t shut up nobody is going to want to hire her. She seems very ungrateful, if it wasn’t for Grey’s she wouldn’t have a career. I still can’t believe she won an emmy over Sandra Oh anyway.

It is her right to refuse the nomination. But, it is always important to do things with class. Placing the blame on the writers for not giving her more to do/better storyline is definitely not the way to do it.

It is because of this show and it’s writers that she got to where she is. She thinks an awful lot of herself to make that kind of statement. Very silly to piss of the people that can make or break you next season. If she is that unhappy, then break the contract, leave the show and I think Gray’s will go on nicely without her. (btw, her movies have not been that good)

She sucks!!! I used to like her, but now I can’t stand her!!! She did the same exact thing with Knocked Up. After the movie was a hit, she criticized it. She is totally biting the hands that feed her and I hope she gets what’s coming to her.

She had a storyline? This season was not Izzie’s shinning momment. Season three where she came back from Denny’s death was amazing, but it feels like it has been down hill from there. She slept with her best friend and then his wife found out, Meredith slept with everyone and she hasn’t gotten a nomination, that I’m aware of. I honestly feel that she was right to refuse the nomination. If she feels she didn’t deserve it, why bother? She isn’t what she once was and I suppose that is the writers fault. There isn’t the same depth that there once was, but I feel it will be better when she attempts to consoul Alex.

I read Katherine’s comments and I took it to mean that she was saying that the writers didn’t get a chance to write her a storyline that she felt was Emmy worthy because of all the time off from the strike. I didn’t feel like she was blaming them and trying to say that they failed her. Of course the snipets of her comments that I’m finding online now seems to have left out some of the things that she said and is painting her in a bad light.

Well, I agree with many of you, as much as I desagree… I think her caracter didn’t had a lot of action this season (wich I HATED). I mean, the George/Izzie relationship might have been sooooo much better than it was but i guess the writters didn’t care much about them cuz all the Mer/Der/Rose drama, the Yang/Burke thing and the new Torres/Hahn relationship… I totally agree with Katherine! I really don’t think she did anything spectacular (except the Alex thing, wich was WOW!!) this season as to deserve an Emmy! And I don’t think the writters should be angry at her… She told the truth, her caracter didn’t shine as much as it should!!

Sorry… I’m from Venezuela so my english is a little bit bad, but I hope i made my point clear… :$

I think her comments are fair. If she doesn’t think she deserves it, she withdrew her name from consideration. She should be applauded not critisized for it.

If it had been an actor, not much would’ve been said, but since she is an actress who chooses to speak up about whatever she feels she needs to, she gets labeled. Its unfortunate that we expect women to keep their mouths shut and not express themselves however they want.

Remember the media loves to tear down stars and twist the words around.

btw, to hell with the writers, its their fault we had to wait 4 months for decent tv, noone put a gun to their head to go on strike. If they didn’t have enough time to write, that’s THEIR problem. Not the actors and actresses.

I do not think that she is being criticized for what she felt. The thing that I do not agree with is that she took it to the press. This girl is ALWAYS bringing her thoughts and her mouth to the press. How many other actors do you hear critizing the writers. Justin Chambers has had nothing as far as a meaty role and you do not hear him whining. What KH did was immature. She obviously has alternative motives for doing this. At one time I use to really like her as one of the interns, part of the ensemble, but now not so much.

I don’t think she was dissing the writers, I think she was dissing the Producer, who decides what the story line will ultimately be. I think the producer was unhappy about Heigl’s strong pro-gay stance against Isaiah Washington and now she is paying her back. I think it’s great when people speak up for themselves. Washington should have been off the show much sooner, obviously the producer was fighting for him. I’m on the side of the non-homophobe.

I think the writer’s are upset about her stating the obvious, bcuz on a serious note katherine’s part in season 4 wasnt all that, it just wasnt her turn to shine that season and im sure the writers know this, I mean HELLO! they wrote her part. At the same time heigl probably shouldnt have made her comments/opinions public because ‘negative comments made abt ppl to the media = bitch slap to da face!’ no matter what her intentions were or what she was really tryin to say or what she meant, its still gonna be interpreted that way - as a diss- so of course the writers would take offence.

    Jun 23, 2008 at 3:57 pm

On another note, the writers did do some justice in terms of the material they produced. I mean i see:
-justin chambers getting something for the final episode.
    - chandra gettin a lil sumn sumn for her role
-sara ramirez (luv) gettin sumn for tht episode heart of the matter, tht scene where she was sayin “…You didnt luv her…cuz you dont destroy the person that you love…”
    - plus more.

  • Kimberly Clark
    Jun 24, 2008 at 5:47 pm

stop blaming the writers. She’s mad at the producers. The producer and the network approve the story line. The producer is punishing her for standing up against homophobia. The producer is Aftrican-American. There is lots of stuff going down here regarding support for minorities. Kathryn just shot right back. Shows she had ‘nads. Too bad the press is not covering this angle. The truth is always cool.
