Isaiah Washington Files Complaint Over Image Use in Grey’s Anatomy

by Ingrid Diaz on May 15th, 2008

Isaiah-washington_spI’m amazingly not surprised to hear this bit of news. When I saw Isaiah Washington’s picture on last week’s episode I thought, “Hmm, I wonder how Mr. Washington feels about that?” Well, it looks like he’s rather upset about it. Indeed, the former Grey’s Anatomy actor has filed a complaint against ABC for the use of his image.

The actor has stated that the network has “no right” to use his image without permission. His attorney, Peter Nelson, has written both to ABC and SAG (Screen Actors Guild) over the matter, citing, “They have the rights of the character to advance the story, but not the image.”

A financial settlement is expected.

What do you think about this? Do you think he’s right to file a complaint over this matter or do you think he should get over it and move on? I think this is one of those grey areas (no pun intended!) in which either side can probably build a good argument. However, ABC will probably settle just to get the matter resolved with as quickly as possible.

Good for him! I don’t think he should have been fired for what he said.

I have always been uncomfortable with his whole situation - the way it went down. And with the way they got rid of him, I think he has every right to file a complaint. They should’ve asked permission and, if denied, they could’ve shown the article sans photo.

he has every right to complain, but ABC does have character rights so they should have just shown the article and had a larger headline that was shown for a longer time so we would still know it was him

I don’t blame him at all. It was like the whole episode was set up to be a slap in his face. I think it’s a shame someone can be fired for saying something like that. What about his freedom of speech? Homosexuality is against many people’s religion. What about his freedom of religion? It’s all ridiculous. I’ve always been a Grey’s Anatomy fan but the way they are trying to push the gay agenda down our throat makes me almost physically ill.

He has every right to sue. I was surprised when I saw his photo, a part of me hoping they amended the bad blood between the studio and Isaiah Washington. I understand why they let the actor go. He should have not made those comments. He has the freedom of speech. But even the freedom of speech has it’s limits. When it crosses lines into discrimination in the work place, then the freedom of speech amendment has been overstepped. However, he’s reaped his punishment by being let go. It should have ended there. The show sorely misses his charecter as far as I’m concerned. So I couldn’t help but feeling like the picture was a foreshadowing of his return somehow, rather than rehashing closure for Yang. Either way after reading this, I can’t say I’m surprised. I don’t blame Washington at all to be honest. I hope he gets a decent settlement. ABC should have known better.

i find it hard to believe ABC did not ok the photo use before hand. Isiah needs to crawl back under his rock. He should be happy his face is out there.

I’m glad that he is suing. He should never have been fired from the show. I, too had hoped that he was being brought back. I wish him the best of luck.

Way to go Isaiah, He is well within his rights to file a complaint against ABC. He has rights too and those rights were definitely violated. It is his face and he has a right to determine where it may or may not be used. Grey’s only owns the character (a fictional person) not the real person.

hi! ABC should ask him first that’s true, but i think the picture and the article made perfect sense for the storyline and grey’s anatomy owns the character so, i think the complain is a little bit stupid..because is just piss off. I willy like him in grey’s s preston burke..but willy did you see in the golden globes..how he embarassed all the cast and crew..god..he is such an asshole! freedom of speach? common guys..that wasn’t freedom os speach..that was just to offend Tr knight! He don’t like gay people..good for him..but he can keep is mouth shut! If he should be fired? it’s complicated..but keeping TR and him together must be difficult..and i prefer george honestly! And shonda did a great job in the season finale..preston burke not marrying cristina made sense ;)

    kiss guys
