Grey’s Anatomy 4.01 “A Change Is Gonna Come”

Well season 4 is on its way, and “A Change Is Gonna Come” has graced our TV screens for the first time. What did you guys think of the first episode?
I really liked the pacing and the humor. I loved seeing the interns making others’ lives hell. Felt bad for poor George, though. It must be so awkward no longer being an equal. Lexi needs to work on her timing. People are dying and she decides that’s a good time to tell Meredith that she’s her sister? Hope those wasted seconds didn’t impact the sick person’s life much.
Did anyone find the character dynamic weird now that Burke and Addison are gone? I was okay with their absense, actually.
Anyway, discuss away. What did you like or not like about the episode? Did it change or reinforce your expectations about season 4? I’m rather hopeful about the season myself. It reminded me of season 1 a bit, which is never a bad thing.

I wasn’t going to watch this year because Burke was gone, so I taped it and watched it later. Curiousity got the best of me, but I was really disappointed. It doesn’t have it for me anymore. Burke’s absence was felt throughout the show as was Addison’s. Probably won’t be watching the rest of the season especially since I read D. Carroll will be on in the future to remind us again what we are missing without Burke.

I thought last night’s premier was great! I laughed…it’s been awhile since I’ve seen such a good Grey’s episode. I really enjoyed it. I liked the chemistry between Derrick and Meredith and I even liked Lexie.
I can’t wait for Alex to hook up with someone. ( lexie??)

At first, I wasn’t quite sure. I felt like everything was awkward; the interns, the interaction between most of the characters. I liked George’s acting though…I could feel his anger and disappointment through the tv screen; when he talked with Lexie in front of the babies, I could even touch it!
I didn’t really miss Addison since I watched Private Practise and it’s still too new to miss Burke already. I might eventually miss his sternness and self-confidence in the show.
I disliked Callie though…I hope for her that tomorrow will be better.
As the show went on I laughed here and there and in the end I was happy…it’s not Grey’s anatomy yet but it’s getting there!
I just hope Lexie wont take a too big place, I liked her, but it’s Meredith Grey’s anatomy (boy that sounds weird) that I’m watching not Lexie.
Oh and when Mc Steamy told Mc Dreamy that it’s him he wanted back…oh my god the looks on both of their faces. Priceless. Lol!

I watched it live last night and nearly threw up with how bad it was. Each character was barely touched on. It was random and stupid.
Izzie was put in one lame situation after another and she had this dumb look on her face. She was spineless and dopey. Where is the Izzie that cut the LVAD wires and fought for Denny? As for Callie, she looked like she didn’t even know what was going on.
George and Bailey were very good and outshone every one else.
Everyone of this people were strong and confident last year. Were the writers hit with a stun gun before they wrote the script? The actors in Greys are wonderful, give them something they can work with. I’m so sad.
Small question, if Meredith was allowed to retake the Intern test, why wasn’t George given the same opportunity.

Patty: Meredith was given another chance because her mom and her fake-mom had recently died. She was offered the chance to take the test later but decided to go on with it. When she found herself lost in her inner pain and not even touching her test. She was offered the chance to do it.
George,he had no excuse to fail his test. Except maybe that the writers needed one to fail it and it was our poor George.

I love this show…. The only thing they better make happen is Derek and Meredith. The whole season 3 was heart wrenching They need this. He melts me with the way his is with Meredith She needs to wake up Hes got it all. I’ve been waiting all summer for season 4 to start. It looks like its getting good fast I like that hope it stays that way. When I watched the first episode I liked it but i wanted more. It got alot more interesting at the end with derek and Meredith. Izzie and George are made to be together. Its hard to wait a whole week to see another episode.

I give the episode a 6 out of ten starts. Glad that McSteamy is still on, but, hope that they make his character a little more likeable/vulnerable (kind of like how Kate Walsh an Alex became a little more likeable as they showed a softer side). LOVE LOVE LOVE George and Izzie together, but hope they steam it up and give it a little sizzle/tension-right now they seem potentially like a comfortable old shoe. NO NO.
Lexie Grey-annoying character and boring. Hope she stays a minor character. Callie needs to get on with her life and quit feeling sorry for herself-george likes izzie, her interns don’t like her-boo hoo. love the callie character, but, they need to amp it up a bit.
Derek and Meredith-they aren’t gonna let them live happily ever after for long people! they’ll keep them together enough to keep us interested. What a tease!

Sep 28, 2007 at 8:25 am
also… hope george’s character stays basically the same, but, gets a little more edge to him. maybe have Lexie interested in him, to keep Izzie on her toes and keep some tension there. george has always sort of been the male doormat-the guy that is always in the “friend” category with women. Don’t want to turn his character into a player, but, hope they give him a little more pizazz/panache/sex appeal.

I agree 100% with Patty. I have loved Grey’s since the beginning, but last night’s show was a joke. It was not even close to the same caliber of past seasons. If it had been the first time I had ever watched the show, I would never watch again. However, I so want it to be what it once was that I will continue to give it a chance to “revive” itself. Did they get all new writers? I felt sorry for some of those interns. Here they are in the hottest show on tv, their big break, and they have to deliver these horrible lines like “Did your brain want to explode with the amazingness of it?” They obviously instructed the interns to act like 5th graders, amazed at babies and watching a man eat clamps without a word to an adult. I can’t decide if Lexi’s acting was horrible or she was doing the best she could with the writing. The deer plot? Give me a break! She can’t find anything involving a human for her interns on the first day? The real deer in the headlights were the poor intern actors. All of the actors - heck, the show - deserve better than this poor excuse of a season premiere. I do miss Burke, not Addison as much, and think the way they handled his character leaving was sloppy. Someone needs to take the paddles to the show. Please, Grey’s Anatomy–come back to life!!!

The premier episode dropped off SO far from where they left off. The dynamic between Lexi and George was weak! George carried it, but Lexi did nothing to strengthen her role in the whole cast. She was actually a bit annoying. As for Lizzie,, what the heck was the deer all about. It added nothing to the show, it actually took alot away from her character and the show, way to much of a stretch. Once again Dr. Baily and Dr. Yang were the best 2, by far. Well written, well acted and very believable. Callie was good at sucking at an Chief whatever, she deserved what Dre. Bailey dished! As for Meredith, how much longer can her and McDreamy go back and forth, they don’t have too much longer before it gets old, but they are still hot!

I’m a die hard Greys fan, and last night was just okay for me. There were WAY too many characters. I agree with the person that said the new interns were given horrible lines. I actually had to turn the channel when the deer scenes came on - horrible story line. I want Denny’s Izzie back!! The scene between Alex and Christina was amazing - I felt for both of them - and loved that the two people that feel the least confided briefly in each other. I laughed out loud in the scene with Mark and Derek. That’s why I continue to watch the show…because those couple of amazing scenes make up for the ones that just aren’t all there.

A friend of mine had one of her songs in last night’s episode — it was playing when George and Lexie were looking at the babies…
Her name is Meiko — love to hear what you think of the rest of her music! Her MySpace page is http://www.myspace.com/meiko
She doesn’t have a record deal or anything but I think you can buy her album on iTunes…
Hooray for Grey’s supporting indie artists!!

I agree with what the majority seems to be saying, the premiere was too busy and there are so many people that had to be focused on. Now that Alex, Meredith, Christina, & Izzie are residents they’re all in different places doing different things plus there’s the new interns including LEXI who I absolutely HATED. Hellooooo? You don’t tell your sister that she’s your sister while she’s rushing patients into the OR. Come on now.
Then Izzie was oh my god, so bad. The only good part about her whole part was calling her interns stupid, I loved that.
I hate Callie as cheif resident. It shouldn’t be her. No one listens to because she has no control over them. They are BAILEY’s kids not hers. The cheif did make a good point to Bailey about her being a surgeon and not signing paperwork and whatever else.
I miss Burke and Addison. Kate Walsh never should have left the show, there’s no doubt about that. Even at wherever she is now her character was complaining about how she wanted to be a surgeon or whatever. The of course there’s Isiah Washington who SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN FIRED. It was a BIG mistake, HUGE.
And where is Rebecca/Ava? I loved her. What’d she just leave with no more attachment to Alex (who now, may I point out, has this digusting chin thing, ew).
George and Izzie… I am all for, definitely. Izzie deserves it and Callie is just annoying.
Derek and Meredith… that’s bullshit. They shouldn’t be having break up sex, they should just be having sex and being in a relationship. Meredith is going through a lot and Derek should be there for her but I do love how understanding he is of it all.
In all honesty last night SUCKED compared to last season and the season before, even season one. I was told this premiere was going to be huge, the biggest of premiere week and I had high expectations but I guess I should take Izzie’s advice and lower them. Next week had better kick ass.

I love Grey’s, but last night was very mixed and did not flow at all. The deer scene was so bad I had to stop looking at it! Callie was lame, Bailey needs a ’story’ because without being Chief Resident she needs a story to carry her character. Lexie is too young to fit into the 2nd year resident’s mixture, and to do what - cause Meredith more angst? I think Ellis and the Chief should have had a ‘love child’ somewhere and this person comes back and it’s boy(man) and gets involved with one of the characters. Also I think Izzie’s child she adopted out shows up in some way and they are reunited - maybe needs a bone marrow transplant or something. Get some real story lines back in here!! Alex needs love interest that takes him down and around the bend, then he needs solace from Yang.
Bring back the old sizzle again in Grey’s

The first episode was okay. I just really hope they let things happen with Derek and Meredith. They should be the happy couple for a season or three! Sad about Burke though. We shall see how next week goes.

Someone needs to perform CPR on this show. I have never liked Meredith, but her moody, mopey, let me screw up everything in my life attitude is really wearing thin. Get a psychiatrist already. George & Izzie - I think it is great that their love blossomed out of friendship, BUT does the word marriage mean anything to the writers of this show? Alex missing Rebekah? whatever…the chemistry was with Addison - even Rebekah knew that. I MISSED Addison because she is/was/will always be my favorite Grey’s character. However, I enjoyed PP on Wednesday. It still has a ways to go, but I am hoping it gets there. BRING BURKE BACK. PERIOD. He & Christina were my favorite couple. Yes, he was arrogant but he was kind. What’s the big problem with Callie? I think she’s pretty cool, her biggest flaw is loving the mousy doormat named George. Thank God Bailey was still Bailey, otherwise I would have thought I tuned in to the wrong channel. My favorite scene of the night was McSteamy and McDreamy - that’s the Grey’s I know and love.
I’ve been a devoted fan since Episode 1 and I will hang in there a little longer, but Ms. Rhimes - you’ve got to do better. And finally, BRING BURKE BACK!

umm…i would just like to say that grey’s anatomy was awesome last night. i kind of agree that it was a little slow in the beginning, but let’s be honest…the ending was incredible!! it really did leave me wanting more (as it always does). for all of you who thought it sucked, i don’t really think you’re giving it a chance. just because 2 people left the show doesn’t mean it’s going to fall apart. everything was the same with the exception of burke and addison. the stories continued, the characters played their roles, and the all-around set up of the show was the same. well all just need to continue to support grey’s anatomy and return every thursday to watch our favorite surgeons.

All you people that are talking bad about the show need to shut up already! It has only been one episode!!! Have some faith in the writers and the actors who have made this show what it is. Anyway, I thought there was some chemistry between george and lexie in that baby scene and then in the locker room. Did not get to see the ending when Izzie opens the door. Who was it? What happened?

Jane: You can watch the full episode on abc.com (if you live in the US, at least).
Gizzie: Don’t like, never did like it — they were great, amazing, as best friends, but this relationship is too junior high. He was madly in lust with Meredith for 2 seasons, she was going to marry Denny. Then all of a sudden this? The nicest guy in the world cheats on his wife? Bethany Whisper falls for McBambi? No. No. NO!!!
Bailey: always my favorite, and she was amazing, telling off the Chief and all. Thought it would be an interesting dynamic, making Callie CR, and it will.
Favorite moment: Christina and the numbered interns. Emotionally stunted kickass surgery girl is baaaaaack!
Private Practice: ughhh, except for eye candy Taye Diggs. If they shut down, I hope Addison comes back to Seattle with McHottie on her arm.

I thought the show was great. It was like the old GA for sesaon 1 and 2. I think each episode wil be even better. I think you could see the good changes beginning in this episode and will get even better as the season continues. We all need to give this season a chance and be patient, it was just the first show, which I thought was good. Everyone needs to let it go that Burke is gone and so is Addison. They have moved on and so should we!

ok i am a really huge grey’s anatomy fan I just bought the last season and watched it just to get excited for this one….The episode in my opinion was a good one but not the best. I am tired of the Meredith and Derick break-up/ get back together story line please we’ve been through this for three seasons lets not make it a fourth it’s really not exciting anymore. Izzie attending to an animal was just a ridiculous storyline all together. The absence of Dr. Burke is soo visible. They really need to bring him back. It’s not exciting with just Mark and Derick their chemstry was so boring. Other than that I would give the show a 7.

The season opener was a big improvement from some of the stuff I watched last season. There were moments when I felt like the spark of seasons 1 and 2 were there. I believe there is hope for this seasons. I predict much better shows this season. Favorite scenes involved Christina and Bailey. Izzie character was so in the way…her part could have been totally eliminated and the show would have been great. I still don’t like the Izzie and George thing because I think Callie deserves so much better. I missed Burke a lot. His absent was so very noticable. I could feel Christina’s pain when she asked Derek about Burke. So much was left unsaid by his untimely departure. Bad, bad, bad mistake!!!
So let’s get on with it and do something really great in the next few shows to make us forget him. That is if we can.

Friends,
Let us not forget why there is no Burke this year. 1. He referred to T.R. Knight (George) using a slur. 2. He and McDreamy did NOT get along and it created horrible tension on the set. Two powerful actors with egos to match do not play well together very often.
However, Where was the strong director/producer who should have stepped in and taken control? I’m sorry that T.R. got “outed” but as far as I know they are adults but didn’t act like it.
Burke can’t come back and we, the loyal fans, are the ones the lament his loss. Poor business decision if you ask me.
Shonda, please don’t tell me you only had 2 good seasons in you. Don’t insult our intelligence with terrible scripts. Get your groove back!!!

Sep 29, 2007 at 1:04 pm
I am not convinced that Isaiah Washington actually called TR. Knight a “F—–”. I listened to Isaiah’s side of the story on Larry King and he made sense to me. He admitted using the word in the argument with Dempsey, meaning he didn’t want Dempsey to treat him like a wimp, but he claimed TR. Knight wasn’t even present.
But regardless of what happened, how did a private argument get to the media? Something is really fishy. They made Isaiah jump through hoops last year to secure his job and then they fired him at the end of the year. They used him.
Firing him ruined the show and that is so sad because Grey’s was the best show on TV.

I miss Burke. Bring him back!!! Interns too lame and unattractive. We care about main characters and new interns don’t add anything to dynamic of show…except maybe Lexie who seems dull and disposable. Scene with McDreamy and McSteamy best. Chemistry between Izzie and Beorge still great..Meredith and Derek still hot. Just bring back Burke!!!d

What a joke that episode was!!! I was totally disappointed. I have been a big fan and I couldn’t even watch it at some points. The deer scene…Are you kidding me???? What was that about??? And I agree with the comment above….has anyone ever heard of the term MARRIED!?!?!?! George is married and Callie deserves much better than the crap George is dishing out. Meredith and Derek’s on again off again relationship is getting really old, and needs to be resolved one way or another. The interns acted like they were 10 years old. By the time they go to residency they have seen and done many procedures, delivering a baby definitely being one of them, they really had the worst lines I had ever heard. Needless to say, very, very disappointed and will probably not watch next week.

Sep 29, 2007 at 5:07 pm
You have all got to be kidding me. It’s Isaiah’s fault that Burke is gone. It’s not that he used the f word in his fight with Patrick that lost him his job, it’s that he used it again at the Globe’s and based on his post-firing comments never learned the lesson he was supposed to from the incident and his anger management classes. He was known as a hothead before his Grey’s role and should have been grateful for the opportunity to star on the show. Instead, he blows it by using the kind of language that any good HR person would tell you is completely inappropriate for a workplace. The show had to get to rid of him. It sucks for the story line, but stop pretending this is something the writers “chose.” This is something Isaiah forced on them.
And many of you are missing the point that the feelings you’re feeling are the feelings you’re *supposed* to be feeling. Remember when Callie told Finn that they’re all still stuck in high school because as doctors they get emotionally stunted because they’re all driven towards their careers? Yeah. That’s what’s happening with George and Izzie. Of course he’s married and these are two people who would normally cheat or be the other woman. But, they’re emotionally stunted and George’s marriage doesn’t “feel” like a marriage to them. Intellectually they get it, but in their emotionally stunted world, it isn’t always at the forefront of their thoughts. They’re like two 19 year old best friends when one goes off and gets married because he thinks it will solve the problems he’s facing rather than realizing - like an emotionally healthy adult - that marriage is only going to heighten all the problems he’s already facing. George’s marriage to Callie in the first place was a mistake and because both Izzie and George realize that, that’s what comes to the forefront of their minds when they think about Callie and George.
And of course Izzie and George don’t love each other. Again, it’s like 19-year-old best friends (emotionally). Izzie thinks that she’s losing her status as George’s #1, and after having lost tons of other things in her life (the relationship with her mother and perhaps father (if she even ever knew him), her baby, first when she’s born and then her baby again when the baby comes for the transplant, and Denny), she’s holding on to whatever real relationships she has with real men. And George isn’t in love with Izzie but doesn’t recognize the difference between loving someone and being in love with them when it comes to his best friend, whom he feels especially protective of because of the problems she’s faced, particularly when his own love life is in shambles and he knows he’s made a huge mistake.
I’m sorry that it’s not pretty or easy, but that’s real life and that’s part of what makes this show awesome. It takes all the real-life flaws and insecurities real adults doing a job like doctors and lawyers. Walk in to most large law firms or most hospitals and you’ll find several people as emotionally stunted as our wonderful, wonderful Grey’s characters.
I love this show -and I loved last night’s episode - because it really pays attention to the human element and human nature, particularly for emotional teenagers caught in adult professions.

Isaiah was drinking at the GG and he said he didn’t call TR.Knight the F word because according to him, he didn’t. He was not allowed to defend himself and I am sure all the cast members aren’t allowed to talk about it either. They are all getting big bucks. But again regardless of what “really” happened, and regardless of what some people thought about working with him, they punished him, and used him, and then threw him to the lions. If what he said was such an outrage, why didn’t they fire him right then and there? Why make him go to rehab and apologize and make an ad about saying the wrong thing, etc., Just my opinion but I think they knew they would have a lawsuit on their hands if they did fire him, because maybe just maybe, he was telling the truth.
Anyway, I mourn the old Grey’s, and I hope it gets better, but I won’t be watching it this year

Hey hi i’m from Spain and I really love gey’s anatomy.. can someone please upload it or somethin g so people like me that couldn’t see it last thrusday can see season 4? i’d be really thankfull.
I’m looking forward to see what happens with all the characters.
I think it will have lost something without Burke and Addi, but Burke’s Isaiah’s own fault and don’t say its not true.. and Addison…well at least we get to see her in Private Practice, allthough i don’t see how it’s gonna be anywhere near the stats of GA.

ok i loved it! it started to be not so dark and twisty anymore. george and izzie both love each other and if derek and meredith breakup for good im gonna give up on the show. they so belong together. the whole thing with addison and bourke was just too weird for me though. oh and matt. george tells izzie that he loves her and izzie just stands there totally amazed. the whole episode was amazing i laughed for like 20 mins over the line where bailey was talking to derek and she was just like “well you and grey are no longer smelling eachother in the elevator.” that cracked me up! but i really didnt like lexi that much. but i think it would be hilarious if alex and lexi hook up! i would laugh forever!

For those who says that Grey’s anatomy wasn’t good, that it wasn’t the Grey’s anatomy they all used to love. Please. It was the first episode! I would have hated it if they just switched from the drama of the third season to light and funny as the fourth season is suppose to be. Let the writers close the issues of the third season and after it will be as it was…well that’s what Shonda said anyway. Keep faith people!

Callie needs a g/f; like Christina is to Mer. She had Addison to confide in, but she’s gone. I liked the premier and will continue to watch. I don’t like the Izzie/George story. It’s a train-wreck in the making.

I agree that Callie needs a good friend.
In regards to the comments about this being the first episode and giving Grey’s a chance, I think that is what everyone who is complaining about it is doing. We are giving it a chance, because last season was so disappointing. For me, the show started going downhill with the episode where Meredith almost died. It was just a cheap ratings gimmick and I expect more from GA. They have five episodes to turn the Titanic around and then I have to jump ship. There are just too many good shows on TV to waste time hoping that GA will get its magic back.

And am I supposed to believe the same Shonda that said the Addison episode wasn’t a pilot and that Burke was an important member of the GA cast and wouldn’t be going anywhere?

I have just watched the first episode of season 4 and then gone through a load of these comments…i agree with most of them..lol..i really did enjoy having a new episode to watch and bits of it really did make me laugh…but there are alot of characters and it was alot to take in…so much so that nobody really got much of a say if that makes sense…i really hope Meredith and Derek stay together even thought they are officially not and i think they are making lexie too much like meredith…but then this is only the first episode..i cant wait for episode 2….x

I absolutely love Grey’s Antamoy, so there’s no way I can say that I did not enjoy the first episode of the new season!!! I’m still shocked that Burke and Addison are not going on the show anymore. I really didn’t like Izzie’s interns! And I really loved how Bailey was acting in this episode. She deserved the Chief Resident position.
Anyway, I was looking up clips of past Grey’s Anatomy’s and I found a video of Chandra Wilson (aka Bailey) helping out with the Habitat for Humanity. She’s got a big heart. Has anyone seen it?

I thought it was just me, but during a commercial break I phoned a friend and asked her what she thought…..and you can guess, we cracked up….the deer….the choppy storyline…the incomplete sentences…the bitterness that all of the characters had for the entire show….the deer….the on and off again and on and off again relationship of Der and Mer…the deer….the patient eating the cotton…George’s behavior for the ENTIRE show…the deer….the writing….the acting…the deer (he really did the best job looking just like a deer)….I think there is a need for a good sitcom but I never thought it would be this show. Let’s see we could call it, “My Deer Anatomy”. I will watch this week, it could not be any worse, or could it?

I hate it! I hate it! I hate it! The show was slow and stupid. They gave the intern group to Cali. I loved her last season now I don’t like her. They need to do something with Bailey I can’t believe that they took that from under her, still lover her. I just hate the show. Last seasno was just too darn good for it to come back like this. I hate the new people. George need to find his self and stop playing with Cali. This story line is just not good at all. This show may not last too much longer going at this rate. I was expecting so much more and I was let down! I am going to see what happens on Thursday and if it’s the same then that’s it for me. I will look at the prior episodes on DVD. I wish that they would have left the cast alone. And if they were going to let Washington go then why did they leave Christina at the alter. That was not cool. Get it together. I hate they show! What’s the point of Merideth sister. I don’t understand.

I was not anticipating the show as much this year as I was last year. I hope Shonda can win back the extra 5 million of her fan base. I was very glad that Burke was gone since Isaiah always seemed to be the weakest link as an actor. I used to fast forward his parts and felt bad about missing Sandra Oh’s contribution sometimes. I refuse to watch Bionic Woman simply because they hired the Isaiah Ass. This season of Grey’s should do well if they lighten the tone up and maximize the Derek/Mark/Callie time onscreen.

What a sorry story line when you have Cali playing down her power. She was miscast as the Senior Resident anyway, but to see her lose so much of her confidence left me irritated. Also, trying to play George as the one in control is a laugh. C’mon Cali - get rid of the little twerp and get your groove back!
Losing both Addison and Preston was mistake enough, but this first show wasn’t even good until the last 3 minutes! Too many people - and having each of the residents have a group of interns is incredibly hard to follow.
Karev seemed to be interested in OB/GYN or was it just interested in Addison? Regardless, having George be the delivery doc also was irritating - better to cast Karev.
AND - I truly miss Burke and Addison! They added some very good “glue” to the previous season(s)
I’m not convinced. All the lead up to the first show and it turned into a maze of confusion and I’m not easily confused!

Disappointed. Most of the dialogue was flat and lifeless. The deer segment was totally unbelievable. The bright moment for me was “Joey” who had me convinced he would swallow anything within reach. Too bad they didn’t let him keep all the coins they “pulled out of his stomach.” In real life I’m sure he’d sue to recover that. Hope they bring back “Joey” later after he’s seen a therapist and overcome Pica (is that a real syndrome?)
