Grey’s Anatomy, Isaiah Washington, Chandra Wilson, Shonda Rhimes Honored By NAACP

Isaiah Washington was named Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Grey’s Anatomy on Friday night at the 38th NAACP Image Awards.
Considering that the actor’s image was dragged through the dirt there for a while, I’m rather surprised the NAACP gave him the award. Perhaps it was to boost his morale? Perhaps because they appreciate the strides he’s made to improve himself after his comments about T.R. Knight?
“The last time I was up here I felt deserving of something,” said an emotional Washington, who came thisclose in January to losing his tenure at Seattle Grace after letting a gay slur fly in costar T.R. Knight’s direction, moments after Grey’s won Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes.
“This time, I feel extraordinarily privileged,” he said. “I’m humbled and honored to be recognized by the NAACP.”
I’ve already received emails of outrage regarding the NAACP’s decision to award Isaiah Washington. Do you feel he’s undeserving of the award?
Well, at least without question, Chandra Wilson was certainly deserving of the Outstanding Supporting Actress award, as well as Grey’s for Outstanding Drama Series, and Shonda Rhimes for her outstanding writing skills.
Overall, a great night for Grey’s Anatomy. Congratulations to the cast and crew!

For the love of God, leave the man alone. He made a mistake, people make mistakes, it’s human. If everyone who picks on him feel they’re 100 % perfect then it’s on them…
Isaiah won this award because he’s the best actor. End of discussion.
This award is exactly why he gets paid more than KH, who can’t hold a candle to him.
Lets just be happy for him, and Chandra and Shonda and the entire Grey’s cast for their wins.

I completely agree with your comments, Jo. Leave the man alone - he is an aweseome actor. I personally think the whole case needs to band together like the cast of Friends - they all demanded $1 million per episode and they got it from NBC!! I believe I read that Dave Schwimmer (Ross) masterminded that).

Absolutely! He stepped up to the plate, admitted his mistake and did what he needed to do to make amends. If people choose to be hateful about it, then they have their own issues to deal with. Congrats to Isaiah! We are the ones that feel priviledged to have the opportunity to watch his amazing acting talents every week.

THANK YOU JO! Finally, someone else agrees with me (and the two people whose comments are above me). He made a mistake, he apologized, and he has taken steps to ensure that it will never happen again and to correct his behavior. We need to applaud his efforts, and leave the man alone.
Congratulations to him, and to the other winners!

Well Ingrid, I’ve already shared my thoughts on this with you privately, but I think they’re worth restating here
just to see the nasty reaction they’ll get from other commenters - particularly Ria.
It was unfortunate the the NAACP chose to honor Mr. Washington this year. Not because he is not very talented, but because of what the Image award stands for.
As an organization formed to combat bigotry, prejudice and racism, it’s surprising the the NAACP would chose to give the award to someone with a recent history of making bigoted comments in the workplace. The Image award is not simply given on basis of artistic or social merit, it is also meant to be given to those who have behaved as role models for the African American community, and for that matter, the community at large.
This year, Mr. Washington was hardly a role model. He is talented for sure, and he is to be applauded for taking steps to understand and control his anger issues. However, to those who say “He apologized - get over it!”, I must ask them to remember the sequence of events.
He apologized. He contradicted his apology at the Golden Globes and essentailly took it back. He was censured by his network, ABC, and only THEN did he apologize once more. Anger management classes? Ordered by the network as a condition of continued employment.
I’m glad he’s still on Grey’s - I hope he’s really learned something and is a better person for it, but he did not make the effort of his own free will - he merely did what he had to do to keep his job.
The NAACP’s decision to give him an Image award in this particular year was a slap in the face to gays and lesbians everywhere and merely confirms the feeling that conservative, anti-gay Black people aren’t shy about letting gays know how they feel about them.
It’s about the same as if Mel Gibson had been awarded an Oscar this year, Michael Richards an Emmy, or Paris Hilton…well…any award - though God only knows what she’d be up for.
Again - I hope he is sincere, and I hope that he is not actually homophobic. I also hope he has his anger issues under control. He is talented and will continue to work unimpeded so long as there are no further outbursts.
This was NOT the year, however, when he should have been chosen as an example of the best of African American achievement in the arts. By a civil rights organization, no less.
All that said - Major Conratulations to
Chandra Wilson, who could not be a more deserving winner, or a better role model for women everywhere!

Isaiah Washington won an NAACP IMAGE Award not just because he’s a great actor, but because of all the work he does for the community offstage as well.
He’s doing so much more than just acting:
-Coalhouse productions which creates PSAs regarding the issues in our community that affect everyday people and ways to help.
-The Gondobay Manga Foundation which has founded a school in Sierra Leone. He started this after finding out through genetic testing that this is the birthplace of his ancestors.
“Grey’s Anatomy” is just his dayjob.

So Shonda Rhimes caved in to the Gay Mafia and had Isaiah Washington fired. Thanks alot Sista..you made Isaiah bend over backwards to apologize for a slur made in the heat of the moment and still fired him…hope this is your last NAACP award, etc..
