Why Isn’t McDreamy the One to Save Meredith?

by Ingrid Diaz on February 16th, 2007

Going by the spoilers here (and I want to believe them), it isn’t McDreamy who ultimately saves Meredith. What I wonder is … why? I can almost picture the writers sitting around tossing ideas back and forth and discussing the very romantic notion of McDreamy saving Meredith.

Is it because it would be too obvious? Not dramatic enough?

Shonda put forth the question:

Who is he if he isn’t the guy who rescues Mer? Who is he when he can’t save a life?

I found that question to be really fascinating.

If you were writing the show, would you have McDreamy be the one to save Meredith? Or do you think it’s better this way? Watching McDreamy be helpless and lost?

I suppose you can’t always be the one to save the one you love.

qhy all the talk that Mcsteamy didn’t/isn’t going to save Meridith? He jumped in the water and found her, gave her CPR all the way to the hosp? She would have died for sure if he had not done all that even if that is all he does for her

I suppose it involves the actual saving of her life, since she technically dies at the end of last night’s episode. So who brings her back?

In my book McDreamy already saved her the moment he came out of the water carrying her.

McDreamy needs to sit outside and feel helpless. He’s pretty much been a jerk where Meredith is concerned.

I’m getting a little tired of both McDreamy and Meredith’s romance. Ready to move on to new things. I like McDreamy and think he should start some type new romance. Meredith is a whiner, tired of it. I’d like new romances for both of them. I like the character of Addison give her more air time. Start some serious changes on this show or I will move on. Maybe leave Meredith dead and bring her back as a ghost or bring her back looking for a guy like the fire fighter that died. Just change the boring relationship.

doctor’s are often not advised to perform any medical procedure when they are related to the patient– i guess it makes them more nervous. so with McDreamy, its okay for him to just wait outside. besides, he’s the one who found her, got her out the water, took her to the hospital doing CPR… he did his part… he need not be inside the ER. uhhh… i dream of McDreamy saving me, hihihi…

I don’t care who saves her, unless someone actually does. I was fraking out at the end of the episode and I am really greatful for the spoilers on this site. And please, don’t break them up (when she’s eventually back to life)… i love them both together! And NOOOO, she’s no whiner…

I think that Meridith is going to die and because they said she has Hypothermia, when her body warms up, her heart will start up again. It will either happen when everyone is in the room, or it will happen when Meridith is in the morgue. Just a thought…

But seriously, they can’t kill Meridith. It is her show….

Ok, here is what I think. Derek isn’t allowed in the room with Meredith because he is romantically involved with her. Just like a doctor can’t treat a family member. To much emotion is involved. i hope that she doesn’t die. That would suck. But I also find it intersting at the end when she wakes up in the “waiting room” with the white light. There stands Denny and that bomb guy. So sad that I don’t have a life11 I can’t wait till Thursday!!!!!!!!

I think it’s going to be Christina who saves Meridith. Mer is Christina’s “person” and in the promo for next week it’s Christina who’s saying “You have to try again.” Dereck can’t ultimately save her because it’s a greater metaphor for their relationship and he can’t save her from her issues in life any more than he can save her from actual physical death. Isn’t this true in our own relationships in life? No one can really save us…we’re the ones who have to make that choice. That’s a devestating insight for those who get their kicks from being the savior figure…like McDreamy. He’s going to have to deal with that truth I think and he’ll be a bit adrift himself until he does.

McDreamy cannot be the one to save Meredith…. The writers did a really good job making that part of the episode realistic..and here’s why..

In real life, if you are a nurse/doctor and a loved one is put in the care in your hospital, it is unethical for you to care for your loved one as your patient. They never allow you to do that b/c then it keeps you from taking care of your other responsibilities, the other patients.

so KUDOS to the writers for making it realistic!

(for those who are in medical/nursing school, you’d know what I’m talking about)

I think McDreamy already saved Meredith when he carried her out of the water. He shouldn’t be allowed in the room working on her. It makes it more dramatic when he is outside looking helpless, since he is portrayed weekly as this amazing surgeon. Their relationship is pissing me off these days especially the fact that Meredith is so clueless on what goes on when you are involved with someone. I know she has major Mommy/Daddy issues but it is getting really annoying. She won’t be killed but a part of me would like the show more if she did. The only great part of this episode was that we got to see Denny and that bomb squad guy.

I think it should be Addison…she’s the one that came into the room and told them to start doing all these things…and she told Meredith that she couldn’t die because she obviously sees how much Mer means to Derek…I think it would be good for the three of them to move on as friends…so I think Addison needs to save her!

I love Addison and Miranda they both need more air time.

I need more Mcsteamy(Eric Dane) with shirt off.

I do want Meredith to wake up and think about her own career and future and break up with Derek.

I wish Addison and Mcsteamy would get it together and be a couple.

I hope that the chief stays and does not retire he has to much to teach. Addsion, Bailey, and chief are the main good doctors.

I am sick and tired of people calling Merideth a whiner!!!! If you were in her situation, do you think you might be a bit “dark and twisty”?!?! I’m pretty sure you would be. She’s also pretty young…late 20s early 30s…and has a lot of responsibilities, plus emotional trauma courtesy of McDreamy (still love him to bits though!).

Anyways…Mer will clearly live…but I think that her mom will die.

Don’t read this any further if you want to be surprised.

Meredith will be OK. It’s Burke who won’t make it to see another episode. Shonda Rhimes has had enough, if you know what I mean.

  • Tricia
    Feb 16, 2007 at 11:08 pm

We all know how much it means to Chanda and the writers of this show to have things be correct. We watch Mer have to sit out a few days when her mom was admitted the first time, and we watched George have to take a some time off while his dad was in the hospital as well. And most importantly we have seen what happens when a doctor is allowed to be the one in charge or looking after the one they love. And yes we know he is her knight in shinning whatever, and it would be oh so romantic to have him be theone to save her life. But in all reality the cheif was right to kick him out of the room. Chanda knows that this will shows us a different side of Derek, one that is desperate and hopeless- lost. In some ways this will put him on the level where Mer has spent most of her life. And I personaly can’t wait to see Christina take charge and either be the one to save her or the one to yell at and drive whomever else it is that saves Mer. After all waht Burke does not understand is that Meredith is Christina’s person!

i agree that it needs to be someone else to really save her if thats what they mean i was ganna say christina but i think that their relationship is getting a little to intense and idk in the future it might cause problems with burk IDK but i really doubt that she’ll die and umm maybe addison would save her cause she was like about to cry idk the last episode was hard to read

It doesn’t matter who saves Meredith, but I think it should be Christina or Addison. When Addison first popped up on the show I HATED HER. But now, by far, she is my favorite character.

  • Sheri
    Feb 17, 2007 at 7:08 am

OMG….. I don’t want Mer to die as well as all others, it does put suspense into the show and boost rating to make sure everyone will tune in to see if she “Lives” or Dies” and who will be the Hero to save the “Leader of the Grey Pack” I personally feel “Addison” will be the one to save her, only because she the “EX” and she was looking out the door at Derek and seen the emotion he was going through…. Just my two sense :)

    Feb 17, 2007 at 1:50 pm

Don’t get me wrong, I love Grey’s Anatomy a lot more than most. And I DO NOT want Meredith to die. McDreamy was her knight in shining whatever when he pulled her out of the water. But she was under that water for a long time, just look at how blue she was when he pulled her out. The writers said that they weren’t going to play by the rules of television. They’re trying to go for life and not just TV. As Izzie said, people die. Maybe they kill Meredith. We’d be really mad. But wouldn’t you love to see McDreamy really helpless. Christina distraught. Izzie trying to live by her new found beliefs. George struggling to cope with his new marriage and the death of a dear friend. Bailey maybe not so nazi like. They could kill her. I don’t trust them to go all happy ending. She’s dead right now. Maybe she’ll (and I really hope not) stay dead.

    Feb 17, 2007 at 6:02 pm

I think it’s great that McDreamy is not saving Mer’s life. How obvious would it be if he did. The suspense is deffinitely on. Not only is he a doctor but he is her lover, sometimes you have to put your career/job aside and just be human! So that’s what he is doing. Great job!

Derek is helpless because the woman he loves the most is laying on the stretcher fighting for her life and he doesn’t know how hard she is going to fight. That was made evident in the first epiode of this arc. I think that his emotion in this episode is priceless….the fact that he couldn’t even speak to say what he thought to do..it is because he loves her so much. Seeing Mark console Derek was priceless. I would love to see them be friends again. After all, they are family. I hope it is Cristina that saves Meredith. How awesome would it be for the love of her life to pull her out of the water and then the best friend she has to finally bring her back to life. I think Burke would understand Cristina a lot more after that. Meredith better come back…I will quit watching if she doesn’t! However, there is going to be another death….and I think it will be Meredith’s mother. How will that affect Mer?

The women will save her Christina, Miranda, and Addison.

    They are superwoman!!

I think Derek’s going to die, Patrick D. wants to do movies so next season I think he will die.

I have to agree with a lot of the people here… Derek saved her when he freaking pulled her out of the ocean. It’s like what Addison talks about regarding people noticing if you went missing. e saw her jacket, saw the little girl and knew well enough to know that she wouldn’t have moved on without bandaging the guy’s leg or finding a save place for the kid. He saved her by not forgetting- by realizing she was gone.

I just wish someone would go in there and talk her back from the brink of death! A real, live voice should interrupt her conversations with Dylan and Denny and Mer should make the choice to fight her way back to the living world. My first choice to do that would be Derek and my second choice would be Cristina. OMG, did you see her outburst in the previews for next week? Fantastic! I would love to see Derek stand up, stride in Mer’s room and talk right into her ear. His voice could give her the motivation to fight with every last little bit of strength she has left!

Having McSteamy (Mark) ultimately revive Mer
would help mend things between him and Derek,
and move the plot line along in a more mix-it-up
way. After all, they were best friends before Derek
caught Addison and Mark “in flagrante delicto.”
However, since Christina needed to reveal her engagement to Mer, and didn’t get to, it might follow that (out of sheer stubborness and will power) she is the one to do it! PLEASE, no ghost Mer, too boring!!

Meredith isn’t going to die - depending on various factors (ie temperature of the water etc…) a person can survive a cold water drowning. Their symptoms mimic death (hypothermic/blue faced/low or near nil heartbeat - thats why her HB doesn’t register on the machines - flatlining) There’s a saying “She’s not dead until she is WARM and dead” Remember that people…

Derek did save Meredith - no more needs to be said about that.

Personly i think it would be crazy to kill meredith. She is my favorite chacter and i also would not like McDreamy any more because he would just be McHelplessnes. If you think she is whinny than i think you need to walk a mile in her shoes i mean come on. So my final oppinion is if Mer dies the show dies with her.

  • Valarie
    Feb 20, 2007 at 9:21 am

My whole take on this death scene? It is to get the viewers on the edge of their seats, crying and on the verge of hysteria. And just when we think it can get no better? The show is over and the only peace of mind is the “scenes from next weeks episode”. BUT, after this week I think the following week is going to be a repeat, soooooooo… here I will sit on the edge of my seat, crying and sobing and biting my nails.. No… Mer!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • marc

if i was one of the writers, i’d push for cristina to be meredith’s primary saviour. she was there when derek wasn’t [in the previous episodes], she’s meredith’s best friend, and i guess - at the end of the day - she may also be meredith’s person.

i think it would put a whole new spin [even if a small one] on the mer/der relationship, because once again, it’s not him who is there for her, it’s someone else.

and my personal comment on this episode:
meredith chose to die. at the beginning of the episode - she was floating. floating. and she was looking at the place where i’m assuming the dock is and where derek later comes out with her… she chose to die. and it’ll end up being her choice to come back for air, to live again. maybe with deaddenny & pinkmistdylan’s encouragement, cuz they’re there and they might as well do somethin useful ;].

He technically did save her life.
She wouldn’t even be anywhere but the bottom of the water if he didn’t rescue her
so it was mcdreamy who saved her :)

Shepard is a mess, how on earth would he be able to help her anymore than he already has. He can’t even function at this point. I think every doctor in the hospital will have some part in saving her.

I think it’s great that Addyson is steping up and obviously concerned about whether or not Meridith lives.

  • Bethany
    Feb 21, 2007 at 1:13 am

I think that the person to bring Meredith back will definitely not be Derek, and that is a good thing.
We spend all this time watching this show and getting emotionally involved in the characters; going through their ups and downs puts us right there with them. I think that now that Derek and Meredith, even though she obviously has some issues, are now together, this would be the best time to show what Derek (only because Meredith isn’t currently breathing) looks like when he breaks.
I don’t know about you guys, but when McDreamy sunk down to the floor, wiping tears from his beautiful eyes, my heart felt ripped from my chest!
This was smart on the writers’ part… now I’m even more hooked then ever. The even smarter thing was having Patrick Dempsey play the part; I heard that Shonda originally wanted Rob Lowe for the part and that he turned it down… GOOD! I watch this show every week, own season 1 and 2 on DVD, and I cannot picture falling in love with Lowe as McDreamy… Dempsey was the perfect choice. But he is not the perfect choice to save Meredith from flatline.
Even though he ultimately saved her life, I think that it will be Cristina who revives her, either that or it will be a group effort from a mixture of Addison, Mark, or the Interns.
My reasoning is the same as the other posts, in that Cristina will do it for selfish reasons: her engagement news and that she needs Meredith to balance her out. If it is Addison or Mark that gets involved, it will be because they see how Derek is suffering. If it is a group effort by the Interns (including Cristina), it will be for the obvious reasons, although I don’t think George will be involved because he seems to have already given up.
Now that this post is extremely long and I have adequately embarassed myself, thanks for reading my ramblings.
P.S. Did I mention that I agree that she won’t die because SHE IS THE SHOW? (Not in that her character is the best, but that her character is the one that the show is about… its about her life devoid of true happiness and how she finally finds it for the first time.)

I have to say I look forward to reading everyones thouhts on the show and they’re all are fantastic! Tomorrow (Thursday) GA is on here and it’s the last show of this Season, my thoughts are they better not drag out who will be the one to one”s to revive mer and leave us haning til next season (Which I can see happenin) however, either way I will be watching.
I myself haven’t misses an episode yet and have both seasons 1 & 2 on DVD as well… I think the writers are well aware how popular this show has become and that “Meridith” is the main attraction of the show along with Mcdreamy……….So I don’t think she will die and be written off the show, if anything they will leave us hanging with suspense.

I love this show! I would be really sad if mer would die or mcdreamy. I also would not watch the show if the cause mer and mcdreamy to end thier relationship. What I think will happen is she will come back and their relationship will mean more to the both of them and relize what they have. Yeah i am tired of them chasing eachother around. They need to be together the whole show is about them. If anything should happen it should meredith to be pregnant and callie thinks she is pregnant. I really would like to see them have a mcbaby and have a hot realtionship.
