A Look at Grey Matter

by Ingrid Diaz on May 11th, 2006

I’ve mentioned a few times that if you’re not reading the Grey’s Anatomy’s writer’s blog, you’re missing out. Shonda Rhimes and the rest of the writing staff do a marvelous job of explaining, expressing, and outlining the who’s, why’s, and where’s of each episode. They make themselves available, because they, too, are fans of the show.

The Miami Herald has recently taken note of the writer’s blog, and written a great article about it.

Grey Matter is a giant gossip circle, in which the writers are less authoritative than apoplectic. ”I am freaking out,” one admitted online, describing the ill-fated tryst she’d penned between Meredith and George. “I’ve been freaking out for months.”

In addition to their panic attacks, the writers describe their insecurities, neuroses, romantic histories, and irrational love for the characters. They draw hundreds of comments, most of them from women, many filled with emphatic statements of ”OMG!” and “I LOVE you!”

Some fans attest to tears shed in front of the TV or workdays — or schooldays — rendered useless by post-Anatomy conversations. ”I think this show is going to be the downfall for my AP tests over the next two weeks,” a fan named Vanessa wrote recently. “How can you possibly concentrate on calculus or English literature with so much Grey’s anxiety and excitement on your mind!?!”

One of the wonderful things about the Internet is that it connects the fans to the objects of their admiration. Everyone and everything becomes, or at least seems, more accessible. In the end, it’s up to those in the spotlight to either reach out to the fans, or loom in the shadows. The Grey’s Anatomy fandom is one that I admire because the cast and crew always reaches out. For anything to be successful, passion needs to be involved. It’s really nice to know that it’s not just the fans that are passionate.
