Grey’s Anatomy Fans Upset Over Meredith George Hook-Up
Okay, so I was right there along with everyone else, screaming at the TV when Meredith started taking George’s shirt off. I kept thinking, “Noooooo, don’t do that to poor George!” Couldn’t she just let him down gently? Couldn’t she just hug him instead?
The writers have explained their position, that Meredith was vulnerable and that George was there when no one else (her father, Derek) were. I can understand why Meredith did what she did. Doesn’t mean I have to like it, or her, for it, but I understand.
Still, many other fans are seriously angry over the whole thing (I sat there for a long time reading the comments in the writers’ blog). The whole thing has even caught the actors’ attention.
Though he says he tries to be “insulated” from fan feedback, T.R. Knight, who plays George O’Malley on “Grey’s Anatomy,” couldn’t help but notice that there was a huge reaction when George and Meredith Grey had a romantic encounter in the show’s Feb. 19 episode.
“It was a long time coming,” Knight says of the ill-fated encounter. But many fans were wildly against the very idea of the hookup, so there was a furor, especially online, when it first happened.
“I was out, and a woman came up to me and Katherine Heigl [who plays Dr. Isobel Stevens],” Knight says, “and she talked to us and then she turned to me and slapped me on the arm and said, `Shame on you. You know she doesn’t love you. Why did you do that?’”
Hm. Do you ever worry about people and their inability to differentiate real-life from television? Hm, well I do.
Still, Knight says the wrenching encounter between the young doctors — viewers found out in the Feb. 26 episode that it left Meredith in tears — may take George to some interesting places.
“How is he going to recover from this? Is he going to be an adult and change at all? As an actor, when you’re doing a show you don’t really know what’s coming next, but this definitely shows room to grow,” Knight says. “I think George has a lot of growing up to do. Part of that is making horrible, stupid mistakes.”
Okay, first step, Georgie (I can call you that, right?), is get a better haircut. Preferrably one not done by yourself. Second step, go for it with Dr. Torres. She’s McLatina Spicy and you can’t go wrong with that.
